This course will give you the knowledge about gender, sex and sexuality to take the next step in addressing social and cultural issues through digital storytelling.

Listen to the welcome introduction

To briefly introduce myself my name is Danelle Wolfe and I will be your instructor for this Gender, Sex and Sexuality class. I am a student at Empire State College and am going for my master’s degree in Adult Learning with a concentration in gender, sex and sexuality. I have two bachelor’s degrees. The first is in Business, Management and Economics, the second is in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Writing. I have lived in twenty states. I have written two books, an autobiographical anthology and a how to pet physic reading book for owners of pets.  Both yet to be published. I have also written a screenplay based on a hate crime I was involved in, 2008. On a personal note, I am a cisgender woman where my gender identity corresponds with that of my biological sex assigned at birth . My biological sex is female and my sexuality is pansexual. I live in sunny Sarasota with my two kids with paws, my cats.

Good Luck!

Through a distributed learning environment Twitter you can contact me @Mymodule1

You can also ask short questions, comment and leave feedback or observations. I will also respond to notes left on WordPress.

Let’s begin with a short video on Sex & Gender Identity: An Intro

Simmons (2006) discussed the effective communication channels. Communication is not only words but, tone, facial expressions, body language, gestures, listening, and timing. It is both verbal and nonverbal as Simmons noted, “When you tell a story, your body and your voice become the stage, actors, costumes, music and props” (85). A good storyteller speaks from their heart. It is not only why a story is told but how. It is up to a leader to connect with others through story which incorporates sensory perception and personal experiences whether their own or someone else’s. Storytelling opens the door to expressing similar experiences that others can relate.

Listen to Lecture

Digital Storytelling is the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences and insights. Tell your story now digitally. – Leslie Rule, Digital Storytelling Assoc.

Digital storytelling is motivated by a desire to have an impact on social attitudes towards gender, sex, and sexuality, both in their personal province of friends and family, and in public domains constituted of unknown or invisible audiences.

Digital Stories invites mainstream audiences to “walk a mile in my shoes”offer self-identied minority groups an opportunity to communicate both personal and political beliefs to a mainstream audience. (para p 171)  Vivienne, Sonja (2017).

Evelyn Cole commented, “Humans are story-tellers. Everyone has a story to tell because everyone uses language to share visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, and kinesthetic memories.

Empathy.org, stated, “Empathy has long been an intrinsic part of the educational system, if schools  are involved in intellectual, they are inherently involved in emotional (para. Hilton, 2008, p. 90).

Not only must teachers have empathy for their students in order to best teach them, they must develop this skill in their students, “Expressing care for another is not an innate ability…” (Hilton, 2008, p. 90).
